Catch Up with Pibgorn
----------------------------------------------
Brooke McEldowney's new strip follows the saga of the fairy Pibgorn. The story so far: Pibgorn took her human love interest, Geoff, reduced to fairy size, on an "unscheduled flight." Unfortunately, the flight was also illegal, and so she was caught by the wings by Prince Creweth and sentenced to death for her crime. Before her sentence could be carried out, Geoff broke free of his spider web prison with the help of Pibgorn's friend (and field mouse) Maurice.

Upon Geoff's escape, he managed to grab Pibgorn's tethers, but before he could break her free, Gaggot (Creweth's evil sidekick) let fly an arrow that struck Geoff. Gaggot's arrow also sliced Pibgorn's tethers, and our heroes escaped.

On the lam, Pibgorn healed Geoff's wound with a magical kiss, while Creweth hired his consultant fly, Luciano, to assassinate her.

Before Luciano could execute his mission, he fell in love with Pibgorn.

Can you answer these comics questions? (Find the answers following the next section.) Which comic character fits this description?

"It's not easy being an undiscovered genius. Armed only with his notebook, a number two pencil, and a knack for making fun of virtually everyone around him, this character is blazing a trail through sixth grade like a young Michelangelo."

Which comic is drawn and written by a husband and wife team?

Get Fuzzy 2: Fuzzy Logic

Interview with Rose Is Rose Cartoonist Pat Brady
----------------------------------------------
Question: What cartoonists have influenced you?

Pat Brady: When I was very young I was influenced by all the cartoonists whose work appeared in MAD magazine. They were creating cartoons radically different from anything I'd seen before, and I was mesmerized. Until I saw my first MAD, I thought cartoons had to be about ducks and bunnies doing slapstick. I studied each panel with a magnifying glass thinking, "Oh, yes, I want to do that!" or, "Oh, no, I'd never do that!" Some of the MAD cartoonists I worshiped as gods and others I condemned as poseurs. I tried to draw exactly like those whom I admired. I made mistakes, and sometimes found that I liked what the mistakes looked like, so I cultivated them. I still do. This ever-blooming garden of mistakes is what passes for my personal style.

Q: What was the inspiration for Rose's alter ego, Vicki?

PB: There's a song with a line that goes, "I knew the bride when she used to rock and roll." Vicki the biker was born of the desperate look in the faces of young parents jolted awake to reality as if smacked with a Zen master's cedar stick. With Vicki the biker I try to add a twinkle to Rose's eye and tweak readers.

Vicki is exhilarating and totally street legal. She's immune to criticism because she doesn't really exist.

Q: Do you own a cat, or any other pets?

PB: We have no pets at the moment, but I do love cats and have lived with many in my lifetime, including, but not limited to, Pooper, Shirley-Joan, Fluffy, Wild Guy, Runt, Mister Weems and Motor Mary.

Q: How has feedback from fans affected Rose is Rose?

PB: Feedback often awakens me to a greater potential in certain themes or visual devices, and leads to new and better material. Instant feedback via e-mail enhances this process and also provides those pats on the back that are so important to kids in their fifties.

Q: Where does the title of your new book come from?

PB: "High-Spirited Rose is Rose" is a title filled with promise on which I gave my personal best to deliver.
