Bittle was raised in Wichita, Kansas. He lived with his wife and three daughters in Dallas, Texas until his death in 2003. Bittle used to say of his fans, "I get a lot of mail from different parts of the country telling me, 'I grew up in that town, and I know those people. And all this time I thought I was the one who grew up in that town and knew those people." Bittle also created Shirley & Son, a warm and funny look at family life after divorce, for United Feature Syndicate.
