The Tree Family grows together as Ames and Maggie strive to raise their kids to become good global citizens amid the temptations of our plugged-in, trashtalking, energy-profligate world. Daughter Twig is determined to lead the green revolution – as long as she doesn’t have to give up her numerous hair products. Both generations of Trees receive helpful advice and support from Maggie’s mother, Agatha Bell, whose door is always open to the latest happenings in the Tree household.

Maggie Tree |
 | |
Perpetually running around on behalf of her kids, her job and her mother, Maggie Tree feels as if she does everything for everyone except herself. Somehow she makes sure the whole family comes together at the dinner table, even if it’s just for mac and cheese out of the box. |

Ames Tree |
Quiet and hardworking, Ames Tree is married to harried career mom Maggie. He supports her, their children and their internet/phone/TV provider via his landscaping service, "Tree’s Trees." He battles nature and encroaching big-box garden stores to keep hope and hostas alive. |

Lydia "Twig" Tree |
 | |
Equally firm in her passions to create a greener planet and for stylish blue jeans, Twig lives to identify her mother’s ecological and fashion missteps. Her favorite homework is studying teenage girl friendships, longing after the divine (and oblivious) Ryan Beardsley and avoiding the incessant pressures of school exams and college prep. |

Ted Tree |
Family reality check Ted Tree is an energetic middle schooler who divides his time between soccer, electronic games and pointing out his sister’s personal shortcomings. He’s never afraid to ask politically insensitive questions of his family – or anyone else who crosses his path. |

Agatha Bell |
 | |
Agatha Bell is a retired school principal with particular tastes and ideas about how her family should behave. A well-loved (and feared) fixture in her town, West Fester, Agatha’s passions include getting her roses and her grandchildren to stand up straight and present themselves decently – without resorting to harmful chemicals in either case. |
